The Gallery committee of VCUQatar invites curators and artists to submit proposals for exhibitions during the Academic Years 2010/2011 and 2011/2012.
In addition to its annual faculty and student exhibitions, The Gallery organizes an annual exhibition focusing on Qatari artists, and three exhibitions of diverse nature, all usually spanning 4-5 weeks. There are no limitations on the format of a proposed exhibition, or the theme or media of work to be included, other than that the exhibition should relate to the mission of The Gallery within VCUQatar as a school of art and design, as well as VCUQatar's service to the local and regional community. In the past, exhibitions at The Gallery have comprised artist and theme focused shows of painting and drawing, photography, fashion, architecture, ceramics, sculpture, graphic and interior design. While most of the exhibitions at VCUQatar focus on contemporary art and design, exhibitions have also comprised historical material. The Gallery encourages professionals at VCUQatar, but also outside individuals, artists and institutions to submit proposals for future exhibitions. Multiple proposals are permitted.
Individuals and artists may propose to curate an exhibition themselves or nominate a curator, who will work on the project with the Gallery Director. The Gallery also encourages the participation of students in such projects.
The Gallery committee reviews and judges these proposals based on merit. The Gallery can make funds available for such exhibitions, that might cover shipping, publications, travel, honoraria and other costs necessary to install and host an exhibition.
A proposal can be sent by post or email and should contain the following information:
1. Name(s) of curator(s), organizer(s), artist(s); institutional affiliation(s); curriculum vitae(s)
2. A brief statement of no more than 500 words describing the exhibition's theme and explaining its significance in the context of The Gallery's mission statement, as well as the degree of the planning stage at which the project is currently
3. Photographs of the works or samples; visuals of previous venues
4. Nature of the works to be exhibited; their needs for handling, display, security, space
5. A timeline outlining the various stages of the project until its final execution
6. A detailed exhibition budget for anticipated expenses, showing other anticipated sources for funding or in-kind support
Attached to this call is a copy of The Gallery's mission statement. Copies of floor plans and elevations, as well as a facilities' report can be obtained from the Gallery upon request.
Proposals or further enquiries should be sent in hard copy or digital format to Dr. Jochen Sokoly, Gallery Director and Assistant Professor of Art History, Virginia Commonwealth University in Qatar, P.O. Box 8095, Doha, Qatar or jsokoly@qatar.vcu.edu by August 31, 2009. Proposals will be reviewed and decided upon by October 15, 2009.
